Avoiding deadline panic... (2)
Further on-deadline tips:
-
· Read your story out loud all the way through – but in your head. Needed improvements will leap out at you.
-
· Chop overlong sentences in two. Try converting subsidiary clauses into stand-alone sentences.
-
· If there is time, print your story before sending, and go through it line-by-line with a mental toothcomb; comb out all redundant words, especially jargon and cliches. Your story will then be much sharper.

This is really helpful. From my own experience, we get so swallowed up by the call of the profession that it is often easy for one to be distracted from such tips that guide us through a great story.
