The Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) is inviting Egyptian journalists to apply for training in reporting on parliamentary affairs.  The training will be conducted by experienced reporters from the Thomson Reuters Foundation, known internationally for the quality of its journalism.

There will be two courses, each lasting one week, to be held March 15 – 19 and March 22-26, in Cairo.  Both courses will be conducted in Arabic.

The courses are open to:
• Reporters who have accreditation to cover the Egyptian parliament
• Editorial managers with responsibility for coverage of the parliament
• Reporters who cover parliament but do not have permanent accreditation

The courses are open to journalists from all forms of the Egyptian media: print, television, radio and online.  Priority will be given to applicants who have been accredited since summer 2007 to report on the parliament.  Applications will not be accepted from journalists who attended the WFD’s previous Parliamentary reporting courses in summer 2007.

Training will cover a number of professional areas, including: ethical standards, sources of information in the parliament, writing with balance and impartiality, the role of the parliamentary reporter and how to find and develop stories on parliamentary affairs.  The courses follow the highly successful WFD courses held in Summer 2007 which led to an improvement in professional standards.

Journalists applying for a position on either of the courses should provide the following documents in Arabic: CV, a 300 word statement setting out why they want to attend the course and a letter of support from their manager.  Applicants should indicate which course dates they are able to attend, March 15-19, March 22-26 or both.  Applicants must be able to attend every day of the course, starting at 9am and finishing at 4pm.

Application deadline:  The closing date for applications is Thursday March 5.
Applications should be emailed to: foundation@reuters.com

Applicants must sent all 3 requested documents in one email. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

WFD and the Thomson Reuters Foundation will arrange interviews with candidates on or around March 9 before making a final selection.  To read this information in Arabic please click here.

I fully understand the concept and totally believe that it cannot do any harm, but wonder as to the ambition of instructing any reporter on their 'Ethical standards' & 'balance and impartiality'. Maybe a course for editors could be in the pipeline ?

  2. Max says:

I think in principle such training courses are a good idea. However, I wonder how much the Egyptian journalists can actually implement in their daily work, given the number of press restrictions in the country.
