China media players get in training with Reuters for Beijing Olympics

Reuters has joined forces with China's official news agency, Xinhua, to deliver a joint training programme to help the country's media prepare for covering the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

It's the first in a series of events marking the 50th anniversary of a partnership between Reuters and Xinhua, forged with a cooperative agreement in 1957.

Olympics news veterans Steve Parry  and Brian Williams, with collective Reuters experience of more than 70 years, will take 30 Xinhua reporters and editors through the two-week training programme organised by Reuters Foundation.

In addition, more than 100 journalists from 20 news organisations in Beijing, including Xinhua and state broadcaster CCTV, attended a half-day event on Tuesday 17 April, where Parry and Williams delivered speeches peppered with advice on how to organise coverage and report on the Olympics. The half-day event and the two-week Xinhua training programme examine how to gear up for the Games, Reuters experience and how to handle controversial subjects such as doping.
 
"For any nation, the Olympic Games is a moment the world looks on, and for a sports journalist one of the most crucial moments of their reporting life," said Reuters Asia managing director, Alex Hungate . 
 
Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games' deputy media director, Xu Jicheng, said: "We hope that when  Liu Xiang (China's gold medallist in the Athens Olympics men's 110 metres hurdles) crosses the finishing line, Xinhua and Reuters will deliver the message to users at the same time."
 
Xinhua deputy editor-in-chief, Peng Shujie, called the programme another in a long string of "comprehensive cooperation programmes over the past 50 years," between the two media organisations.
