A visit to the glittering studios of Al Jazeera was on offer during a two week Writing International News workshop for 10 young journalists run by the Foundation at Reuters London headquarters in June.
The group was given a tour of the state-of-the-art studios and heard news anchor Stephen Cole explain the editorial policies of the station.
The 10 journalists, from Iraq, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Rwanda, Bulgaria, Russia, Moldova, Kosovo and Jamaica, also received a virtual tour of the Internet from former Reuters editor Peter Bale, now Executive Producer of Microsoft’s UK Online Services Group.
During the workshop, the group heard presentations and wrote exercises reinforcing ethics and international standards, sourcing and balance, election coverage, and interview techniques under the guidance of trainers Paul Iredale and Peter Gregson.
They also met with a number of Reuters journalists, including Lloyd Watson, who led them through an exercise on news judgements in covering a breaking television story and Quentin Webb, who introduced them to covering economic news. Tim Large and Mark Snelling of the Foundation’s Alertnet team showed them the journalistic tools now in place on the disaster relief website and talked about the challenges of covering aid stories.

The journalism training ‘Writing International News’ organized by Reuters Foundation, in London, was an an excellent journalistic experience for me. Paul and Piter have shown a real and live practice how to write and handle stories in a crucial time. Especially the exercise "Election reporting", was very helpful for me, it gave me a real journalisic feeling while covering a story. Thank You
i thank reuters for according me the opportunity to attend "writing international news" training programme in Nairobi, Kenya in the year 2006. It was an eye opener and a great motivation. Apart from acting as a platform for debate and interaction with fellow journalists from eight (8) other countries, the training allowed us to interact socially and share both exciting and terrible experiences, that result from our day to day jobs. The course facilitators were just super and unselfish in imparting their knowledge to us. I personally benefited alot and it has since contributed alot to my performance%! 20not only in terms of international news writing but my writing skills in general. It was a unique discovery. Bravo Reuters!
The course on ‘Writing International News’ was a genuine and complete combination of theoretical and practical. The course director as well as resource persons and Reuters Foundation’s staffs were really dedicated to make the course meaningful for the participants. Bengali is my native language but I did not face too many difficulties to understand the lectures on English. Exercises on disaster reporting, election reporting and covering the breaking story were truly interesting and will be very much handy for me. Thanks a lot to Reuters Foundation for everything I had in London! .
It was such an exceptional oppotunity. Reuters once again proved they are ready to give back but a concerted effort from trainers Paul and Peter provided us with the much needed impetus to strive for perfectionis.Quentin was eceptional too. wish the course could be extended to give participants more time to share and learn. I say Ole Ole to 'Golden Quote' catch phrase. What a discovery!!!
