Awards for tv freelancers
2009-06-16 15:21:05

Freelance news and current affairs cameramen and women are invited to submit entries for this year's Rory Peck Awards, the only competition of its kind in the world.

Sponsored by Sony Professional, the event is the main fundraiser for The Rory Peck Trust, which provides practical support to freelance news-gatherers and their families in times of need, and promotes their welfare and safety.

The Rory Peck Awards are a joint effort by the international newsgathering industry and are produced with support from Aljazeera English, AP Television News, BBC News and Current Affairs, Autoscript Ltd, BSkyB, CBC, CNN, Channel 4, Eurovision, GlobeCast, Google, ITN, ITV News, NBC News, Reuters TV, SIS Live and Sky News. The Awards generate wide media coverage. They are named in honour of Rory Peck, a leading freelance cameraman who was killed in cross-fire while covering the October coup outside Moscow's television centre in 1993.

The awards are:

• The Sony Professional Impact Award
For freelance news footage which raises humanitarian issues and has had an impact internationally or contributed to a change in perception or policy.
• The Rory Peck Award for News
For freelance coverage of on-the-day news, where the focus is on the immediacy of the story
• The Rory Peck Award for Features.
For freelance news features: in-depth pieces which look beyond the immediacy of a new story

The Martin Adler Prize sponsored by Atex
A special prize for a freelancer who has told, or played a vital part in telling a significant news story and the recipient could be a cameraperson or the person upon whom they depend in the field – their fixer, driver or local freelance reporter. It is given at the discretion of the Trustees of The Rory Peck Trust.

Closing date for entries is September 4 2009.
