Richard Harrington, former president and CEO of Thomson, becomes chairman of the foundation, succeeding former Reuters Editor-in-Chief Geert Linnebank, who remains a trustee. Monique Villa, former managing director of Reuters Media, is appointed chief executive of the foundation.
Thomson’s acquisition of Reuters was completed in March. Reuters CEO Tom Glocer became chief executive of Thomson Reuters.
Glocer said of the new appointments at the foundation: “I am truly delighted that Dick Harrington and Monique Villa have accepted these roles. Together they will bring a huge amount of expertise, creativity, experience and ideas to the foundation.
“The foundation underpins Thomson Reuters business strategy with a central commitment to the communities in which we do business.”
Glocer added: “in building on the heritage of three decades of the Reuters Foundation, and by leveraging the broader assets and capabilities of our enlarged global business, Dick and Monique will be able to drive the work of the foundation forward, expanding its influence and work across the globe.”
Harrington spent ten years as CEO of Thomson, leading its transformation from a diverse holding company with publishing interests into an integrated operating company providing global electronic information, software and services to the business community.
Harrington said: “I’m honoured to continue my tenure with Thomson Reuters in this capacity and thank Geert Linnebank for his vision and leadership as previous chairman of the foundation. During my tenure at Thomson, we developed an outstanding track record for making a difference in the communities in which we operate. I am confident we can uphold that tradition while supporting the historic priorities of the foundation.”
Villa, who joined Reuters in 2000, was formerly with Agence France Presse (AFP) where she held a number of senior journalistic and management positions. She reported from Paris and Rome, became deputy head of AFP’s political news service and then bureau chief for UK and Ireland, based in London. In 1996 she became director of strategy and business development, responsible for AFP’s major partnerships worldwide.
Since joining Reuters she has managed the pictures and text news business, transforming the picture business and negotiating important deals for media and editorial.
Villa said: “I am hugely excited by the opportunity to help lead and develop the foundation, to extend its global reach and impact and utilise the tremendous skills and expertise within Thomson Reuters. Through various supported initiatives, the foundation will provide knowledge, information and support to diverse communities in which we operate, giving them the means and a voice with which to make a difference.”
Reuters foundation is a registered charity established in 1982 as a subsidiary of Reuters. Its core programmes are journalism training, Reuters AlertNet - a service of news, information and analysis for everyone interested in emergency relief – and part-funding of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, at Oxford University. It is expected to continue to run these programmes and expand its activities to reflect the goals of the new Thomson Reuters.
