Reporting the latest international news can be one of the most demanding – and stimulating – roles for a journalist. It requires considerable knowledge and understanding of world events and usually entails fast responses and regular rapid updating.
Reuters is the pre-eminent provider of news and information around the world and these Reuters Journalism programmes seek to share with participants the skills and techniques used by Reuters reporters and other global news organisations. Practical exercises form the core of the programme with an emphasis on improving the accuracy, impartiality, speed, clarity and structure of reporters’ coverage.
When applying to take part in a course, please read the following notes first:
Course costs
The charge payable by each attendee, to cover the cost of tuition, any field trips, and materials, is shown in the details provided for each course. Travel, visa and accommodation arrangements and costs are usually the responsibility of the attendee but occasionally Thomson Reuters Foundation is able to make special provision for individuals.
Funding
In some circumstances Thomson Reuters Foundation provides grants or bursaries to cover some or all costs for certain attendees if they are from the developing world or are nationals of a country in economic or political transition. The degree of funding provided will depend on the financial status of the applicant's employer. For instance, if the employer is a major media organisation we would expect it to cover the applicant's travel and accommodation costs related to attendance on the course, while the Foundation would cover the course tuition fees.
If you are not sure about your eligibility, please contact us to see if you qualify for full or partial funding.
Eligibility
All applicants for Reuters Journalism Programmes must currently be working as journalists or regular contributors to print, broadcast or online media organisations. They must be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in journalism in their country, must have at least two years’ professional experience and have a good level in spoken and written English.
Submissions
Each applicant must send a completed application form and:
- A biography of up to 250 words outlining your career
- A statement of between 250 and 500 words describing any factors affecting your work as a journalist and how you hope to benefit from the course
- Two recent examples of your published or broadcast work, preferably relevant to the course for which you are applying, with a brief summary in English (if the examples are in another language). If you are a TV/radio journalist you will need to send us examples of your scripts. It will not be necessary to send in tapes/discs to us.
