About us

Reuters Foundation is the charitable arm of Reuters, the world’s largest multimedia news agency which is internationally respected for its fast, accurate and impartial reporting.  Reuters Foundation has shared these reporting skills for more than two decades by providing training for journalists in a wide range of specialised reporting fields, including international news coverage, writing business news, working in conflict zones, and writing about environmental issues.

It has also provided fellowships for mid-career journalists, at Oxford University, and has recently established a new centre for journalism excellence there, known as the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

The Foundation’s special understanding of the work of relief workers and aid agencies is underscored by its funding of AlertNet, one of the world’s top humanitarian websites which provides fast and reliable information on emergencies and is widely used by NGOs, aid workers, journalists and the general public.

Another way the Foundation shares its skills is by mentoring journalists as they build new independent services. An example is the formation in Iraq of a national news agency using a web-based newsgathering and distribution platform. The contributors received Foundation training and technical support, and their reports are edited by Reuters Arabic journalists until the agency becomes sufficiently established to work fully on its own. Launched with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Spanish International Cooperation Organisaton (AECI), the agency is named Aswat al-Iraq (Voices of Iraq).

In addition to its regular programme of workshops for journalists, the Foundation also provides media training for non-media organisations whose staff need to deal with journalists regularly. And it also sets up customised training for clients wishing to offer their staff or journalists in their area some specialised skill development.
